I’m a pretty big trailer nut. I enjoy watching a quality preview almost as much as the film that it’s for. If there’s one thing a quality trailer can do, it’s get you pumped beyond belief for a film you previously were fairly indifferent on. Because of that, I’ve gathered five of the most awesome trailers for films releasing this fall for you to see. Keep in mind, these aren’t the movies I’m most excited for (American Hustle and The Monuments Men definitely belong on that list), but these are five upcoming movies where the trailer has gotten me far too excited. Check out my picks and the trailers below!
Okay, okay, so I’ve been excited about this movie since before it was announced, but that doesn’t make the trailer any less awesome. The use of repetition and narration by Joseph Gordon-Levitt is hardly short of brilliant, and it’s as funny as any trailer you’ll see. Plus, it has JGL singing along to Marky Mark. I can’t dream up anything I’d rather see.
Falling in love is a crazy thing to do. And if there was ever an actor who was meant to play a subdued and somewhat socially acceptable insane person, it is Joaquin Phoenix. This trailer gives us a great look at the next Spike Jonze feature, and really makes it seem as if falling in love with an operating system is a reasonable thing to do. It’s happy and heartbreaking all at once. Definitely a trailer worth watching. (Yes, it doesn’t release wide until January, but it is set to close the New York Film Fest this fall.)
The first couple trailers for The Counselor were exciting, but this one posted by 20th Century Fox UK is on a whole other level. The song is absolutely perfect for this trailer, plus, it shows off Cameron Diaz as a legit villain, which was my main hesitation going into this movie. I’ve watched this trailer about 20 times since it hit the web, and you should probably do the same.
The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty
This trailer is a prime example of how music and proper editing can make a film seem absolutely awesome. The Great Gatsby did this the best recently, but The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty is a close second here. This trailer took the film from not even on my radar to one I couldn’t be any more excited about. Watch it, and get excited. Oh, by the way, the song is Dirty Paws by Of Monsters and Men. (Another film that won’t go wide until the winter but is playing at NYFF.)
I’ve never. Ever. Been this terrified, this absorbed, this engrossed by five minutes of preview. Ever. It’s unbelievable how compelling this film is shaping up to be, and if this trailer is any indication, it’s going to be one of the best things your eyes and brain will ever absorb. After watching this five minute preview I had to go for a walk to clear my head. I can’t imagine what the actual film is going to be like.
